Glacier Hike and Ice climbing

These tours offer glacier hiking and Ice climbing on Vatnjökull, Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull & Sólheimarjökull (part of Myrdalsjökull) Glaciers.

All hikes are with experienced professional guides and safety equipment. Other gear, such as boots and waterproofs can be rented with some tours.

Pick-up

Most tours start close to the glacier and require you to have your own transport. Some tours include pick-up from Reykjavik. Please check the details before booking.

Snæfellsjökull

The Snæfellsjökull glacier sits at the Western edge of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The meeting points for the glacier hikes are about 2.5 hours drive from Reykjavik. Snæfellsjökull sits on top of a volcano that last erupted 800 years ago. The Snæfellsjökull glacier is endangered. Some experts predicting another 15 years before it is gone.

Snæfellsjökull glacier

Snæfellsjökul Summit hikeThis tour is for adventure tourists who literally need to be at the top. You should book this tour if peaks and beautiful views are what you’re after. This is a fulfilling summit adventure hike with great sense of achievement as we summit Snæfellsjökull Glacier at 1446 meters.

This hike can only be booked as a private tour from Meeting Point B. You can take a shuttle or snowcat as far as you like. Your and the guide will plan the hike early in the morning depending on weather conditions. The conditions can vary from knee-deep powder snow to blue ice. We will supply crampons, snowshoes and ski gear if needed or requested.

Snæfellsjökull glacier hikeThis glacier hike is our short and popular. You can experience the magical nature of Snæfellsjökull glacier on this tour. The hike is for those looking for an unspoiled experience with nature. We often stop on the hike to take in the great views over the Snæfellsnes Peninsula on one side and the glacier summit on the other side.

The hike starts at our office (Meeting Point B). We issue crampons and boots then we drive our shuttle up around 750m on Snæfellsjökull glacier. We put on crampons and hike up to the ice at an easy pace to around 880m where we can see crevasses, moulins and ice formations on the route.

Midnight sun glacier hikeThis Midnight Sun Glacier Hike is an experience of a lifetime. The vistas over Breiðafjörður Bay, and Snæfellsnes peninsula in the magical midnight sun makes this tour our most scenic hike. We stop for plenty of photo opportunities on the North Summit before our hike back.

  • Physically demanding

The tour start at our office (Meeting Point B). To start we drive to our snowcat at 1000m. Then we hike up to Snæfellsjökull glacier’s North Summit during the sunset.

The hike is quite relaxed but does require average or above average fitness. We may use snowshoes or crampons depending on conditions.

Sólheimarjökull

The Sólheimarjökull glacier tongue is part of Myrdalsjökull which is the 3rd largest glacier in Iceland. The glacier tongue is easy to access from the South coast road. The meeting point for these glacier hikes is about 2 hours drive from Reykjavik.

Solheimarjökull

Myrdalsjökull glacier hikeYou can experience how it feels to walk on ice on this Glacier walk. The hike is on Sólheimajökull glacier (part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier) in South Iceland. We walk around 30 – 40 minutes from our base to the glacier tongue. We give you a lesson in ice walking and a safety briefing before we walk onto the glacier. Experience this unique environment with crevasse, moulins and ice ridges.

Solheimarjökull glacier walkGlacial landscape are highly dynamic. We hike on Solheimarjökull and experience crevices, moulins and black volcanic sand cones. Sometimes we have the chance to see into the moulins or caves.

The ice is blue and clear in winter. The surface can be covered in snow. During Summer, the ice is whiter and volcanic ash is visible as it makes pattern in the glacier landscape.

South coast and glacier hikeThis tour takes you along the South coast of Iceland to the Sólheimajökull glacier. The tour starts with a Reykjavik hotel pick up. Sólheimajökull glacier is a part of Myrdalsjökull glacier. Mýrdalsjökull glacier, is 600 km2. Mýrdalsjökull is the home of Katla Volcano and is one of the biggest in Iceland.

After the glacier walk we will stop at the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls.

Private ice climbingThis activity includes Ice climbing on Sólheimajökull glacier. The glacier guide will issue glacier equipment and show you how to use it. Then you walk onto glacier with its incredible ice forms, ridges, and moulins. We will find a perfect location for Ice climbing, then everybody will have an opportunity to climb on the ice. This is your chance for a unique exploration of Iceland.

Private ice climbingThis is a chance to hike on one of Iceland’s most famous glacier tongue at Sólheimajökull. The glacier is on the South coast of Iceland and we guide you through its amazing features. We hike up the easily accessible slopes and experience ice formations and crevasses. Our experienced glacier guides will show you how to use the safety equipment necessary for glacier hiking.

South coast and glacier walkSpend the day glacier walking and sightseeing along the South Coast. We explore the South coast and the Sólheimajökull glacier with crevices, sinkholes and ice ridges. All safety equipment and training is provided on site. You will be Approx. 2 hour on the glacier. We also stop at the beautiful Skógafoss & Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.

The sightseeing and glacier tour includes English speaking guides.

Tour includes
Pick up in Reykjavik 30 min. before the tour starts and drop off.
Guided tour on the Bus and then guided tour with the glacier guides.

Vatnjökull

The Vatnjökull glacier is the largest in Iceland and in Europe. It is in the South East of Iceland and the Southern glacier tongues can be easy to access in some areas. Most of the glacier hikes are from Skaftafell or Jökulsarlon area. The meeting points for glacier hikes are 4 – 5 hours drive from Reykjavik.

Vatnjökull glacier

Glacier walk VatnjökullWith a local guide from Hali you experience Natural wonders on this Vatnajökull glacier walk. The trained glacier guide takes you on an ice adventure on Vatnajökull’s largest glacier tongue, Breiðamerkurjökull. The trip starts 15 km East of Jökulsarlon at Hali Country Hotel. The tour includes a ride in a Superjeep.

The minimum age is 10 years.

Before the glacier adventure starts we give you an introduction to the equipment needed to explore the glacier. We issue ice crampons, helmets and ice axes and teach you how to safely use them. It’s important to have the sturdy footwear for glacier walking. We will have the hiking boots ready for people who have rented.

We start with a Super Jeep ride to a glacier lagoon, then a 2 minute zodiac boat ride to where the glacier adventure starts. (We also recommend the boat tour at Jökulsárlón or Fjallsárlón because this one is very short).

We walk by many glacial ice features and deep crevasses. We see sinkholes in the glacier, called “Moulin”, that have drilled a hole through the glacier. The glacier features the ashes from volcanic eruptions, formed into a pyramid shaped “dirt cone”.

Ice climbing VatnjökullThis is an ice climbing tour with a trained local guide from Hali. The tour includes a ride in a Super jeep and a glacier walk. This glacier adventure has a maximum 4 guests so that everyone can enjoy the climbing part of the trip. The tour is designed for people who want an unforgettable half day adventure in the fresh air – walking, climbing the ice and talking.

Minimum age is 14 years.

Vatnjökull private hikeWe drive to the edge of Svinafellsjokull or Falljokull to start this glacier tour. The adventure takes place on glacier tongues which come down from Vatnajokull glacier. At the edge of the glacier we give you crampons and ice axe and start our 1 1/2 km guided hike onto the glacier.
